Four gauges, 13 1/4, 13 1/2, 13 3/4, and 14 PM, provide different playing tensions. Lower numbers identify thinner strings with less tension; higher numbers indicate thicker strings with greater tension.

For violinists choosing a replacement gut A string, these options allow tension adjustments while retaining the same materials and attachment. Pirastro uses 13 3/4 PM in its medium set, making it a useful selection reference. Match an existing numeric gauge for a familiar setup, or choose a lower or higher option when adjusting your instrument's string load.

Pirastro manufactures the Eudoxa family in Germany and forms, winds, and polishes its sheep gut cores by hand. The series offers warmth and tonal variety for orchestral playing, chamber ensembles, and recording sessions. Every option shares the same full-size fit and ball-end connection. Black peg-end silk and white/violet tailpiece wrapping help identify the A position when installing a replacement or organizing spare strings.

Key Features

Sheep Gut Core: Supports a warm tonal character with expressive variation.

Aluminum Winding: Maintains the same material combination across all four gauges.

Selectable Playing Tension: Choose a numeric gauge to match or adjust your existing setup.

Medium Reference: The 13 3/4 PM option matches the A-string gauge in Pirastro's medium set.

Ball-End Attachment: Fits a compatible tailpiece connection designed to retain a ball.

Full-Size Fit: Designed for 4/4 violin applications.

Gauge Differences and Playing Tension

PM denotes Pirastro's gauge scale.
