Choose the 3/4-size or 1/2-size orchestra set to match your instrument. Both configurations contain E, A, D, and G strings with ball ends and support bowed and plucked playing.

For an upright bass replacement set, start by confirming your instrument's size. Select the 3/4 option for a bass requiring that designation, or the 1/2 option for the corresponding smaller instrument. Players preparing for orchestral rehearsals, jazz sessions, or mixed playing can consider these strings for arco, meaning bowed technique, and pizzicato, meaning plucked technique. Keep the size selection consistent when reordering your preferred setup.

Pirastro assigns separate article numbers and published tensions to the two configurations, helping teachers, performers, and instrument technicians specify replacements accurately. Both retain the same core and winding materials, orchestra tuning, and medium designation. Compare the size guide below, then confirm compatibility with your instrument's setup. Record the selected article number so future orders identify the intended version clearly.

Key Features

Two instrument sizes: Select 3/4 or 1/2 to match your bass.

Synthetic multifilament core: Uses a core formed from multiple synthetic fibers.

Chrome steel winding: Maintains consistent winding material across the four strings.

Bowed and plucked applications: Supports players using both arco and pizzicato techniques.

Complete orchestra configuration: Replaces E, A, D, and G together.

Ball-end fittings: Provide the same attachment style in both sizes.

3/4 and 1/2 Size Differences

3/4 Size: Manufacturer article 441020; total published tension of 255.3 lb.

1/2 Size: Manufacturer article 441050; total published tension of 215 lb.

Technical Specifications

Brand: Pirastro

Series: Obligato

Instrument: Double bass

Size Options: 3/4 and 1/2

Gauge: Medium, also designated Mittel

Tuning: Orchestra, E-A-D-G from lowest to highest

Core Material: Synthetic multifilament fiber

Winding Material: Chrome steel

End Type: Ball

3/4 String Tensions: E 68.1 lb; A 65.5 lb; D 62.2 lb; G 59.5 lb

1/2 String Tensions: E 55.6 lb; A 58.2 lb; D 51.6 lb; G 49.6 lb

3/4 Peg-End Colors: E dark green; A black; D rust red; G brown

1/2 Peg-End Colors: E dark green/golden yellow; A black/golden yellow; D rust red/golden yellow; G brown/golden yellow

Tailpiece-End Colors: Rust red/black

What's In the Box

One E, one A, one D, and one G string in the selected instrument size.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0630/3085/3829/files/1-pirastro-1bbs_8d5ebc87-0f1f-499f-a11c-5daecd19b527.jpg?v=1793113914
