Five gauges, from 13 through 14, provide progressively higher published tensions. Each version uses a ball-end attachment, letting players choose string thickness while keeping the same material construction and end fitting.

Choose this aluminum-wound gut violin string when replacing an existing A or assessing your instrument's string balance. Gauge 13 1/2 is the A included in Pirastro's medium Passione set, making it a useful reference for comparison. Select a lower gauge number for a thinner option with less tension, or a higher number for a thicker option with greater load. Check your current packaging when reordering a familiar setup.

Pirastro prepares, winds, and polishes the gut core by hand. For performers, teachers, and instrument technicians, the gauge specifications provide a practical way to identify a replacement violin A string. Compare the options below with your preferred setup, and retain the article number for future orders. Confirm the instrument size and ball-fitting compatibility before installation.

Key Features

Five gauge choices: Compare thickness and published tension within one string family.

Aluminum winding: Pairs a metal outer winding with a natural gut core.

Handworked construction: Incorporates manual core preparation, winding, and polishing.

Consistent ball fitting: Keeps attachment selection straightforward across all gauges.

Individual A replacement: Lets you retain your preferred E, D, and G strings.

Gauge Differences

13: Thinnest option; published tension of 10.1 lb.

13 1/4: Between 13 and the medium-set reference; published tension of 10.6 lb.

13 1/2: Medium-set reference; published tension of 11 lb.

13 3/4: Between the medium-set reference and 14; published tension of 11.7 lb.

14: Thickest option; published tension of 12.1 lb.

Technical Specifications

Brand: Pirastro

Series: Passione

String Position: A

Instrument Size: 4/4 violin

Core: Sheep gut

Winding: Aluminum

End Type: Ball

Gauge Increments: 1/4 PM, the manufacturer's gut-string gauge scale

Gauge 13 Article Numbers: 219221 envelope; 219222 straight

Gauge 13 1/4 Article Numbers: 219231 envelope; 219232 straight

Gauge 13 1/2 Article Numbers: 219241 envelope; 219242 straight

Gauge 13 3/4 Article Numbers: 219251 envelope; 219252 straight

Gauge 14 Article Numbers: 219261 envelope; 219262 straight

Peg-End Colors, Gauge 13: Black/rose-colored

Peg-End Colors, Gauge 13 1/4: Black/blue

Peg-End Color, Gauge 13 1/2: Black

Peg-End Colors, Gauge 13 3/4: Black/dark violet

Peg-End Colors, Gauge 14: Black/olive green

Tailpiece-End Colors: White/brown

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0630/3085/3829/files/1-pirastro-1pava14p_9a8eeada-9a1c-4d0d-82db-1ff5a85e8aec.jpg?v=1793113969
