The 14-42mm range (28-84mm equivalent) moves easily from wide travel scenes and street photography to people, portraits and details. Close-up performance is a highlight: the lens focuses down to 0.13 m at the wide end for food, flowers and textures, with maximum magnification of 0.53x in 35mm terms. That makes it far more useful than a typical kit zoom when inspiration strikes at close range.

A retractable design keeps the lens compact in the bag, and simply rotating the zoom ring extends it, with no separate release switch to fumble. Optically it uses 8 elements in 7 groups with three aspherical elements, a 7-blade aperture and a 46mm filter thread, making it a capable all-rounder for new and experienced Micro Four Thirds shooters alike.
