Description
The Thypoch Simera 28mm f/1.4 is a full-frame manual focus wide-angle prime built for photographers who want the tactile discipline of a classic rangefinder lens without giving up modern optical performance. Its 11-element, 7-group formula combines one aspherical element, one extra-low dispersion (ED) element and three high-refractive-index (HRI) elements with a floating lens group, so definition holds up from infinity all the way down to the 0.4m minimum focusing distance. The bright f/1.4 aperture pulls in light for handheld night scenes, dim interiors and available-light street work, while separating your subject from the background with a depth of field that a slower 28mm simply cannot produce.
Where the Simera 28mm really distinguishes itself is character. A 14-blade rounded diaphragm keeps out-of-focus highlights circular through the aperture range and turns point light sources into clean, artistic starbursts when you stop down, giving the lens a signature that suits environmental portraits, documentary storytelling, architecture and cinematic night photography alike. Engraved sun and moon markings on the barrel toggle the aperture ring between clicked and de-clicked (stepless) operation, so the same lens serves stills shooters who want positive detents and video shooters who need silent, seamless exposure ramps. Everything is manual and mechanical: there are no electronic contacts, just precise metal engineering and a beautifully damped focus throw.
The all-metal anodized aluminum body carries an ergonomic crescent-shaped focus tab for fast single-finger focusing along with a 1950s-inspired red-dot depth-of-field scale for zone-focusing on the street. On the Leica M version - the Type II, which replaces the original infinity-lock lever with that focus tab - the lens is rangefinder-coupled, with a deliberate tactile resistance point at 0.7m that tells you when the rangefinder uncouples and it is time to switch to EVF or live-view focusing for closer work. The same 28mm optic is offered in Leica M, Sony E, Nikon Z, Canon RF and FUJIFILM X mounts in black or silver, all sharing the compact 49mm filter thread. Mounted on an APS-C FUJIFILM X body the full-frame image circle is cropped by 1.5x, giving roughly a 42mm-equivalent field of view - a notably tighter, near-normal perspective rather than a true wide angle.
Features
- Bright f/1.4 maximum aperture for low-light shooting, night scenes and shallow depth-of-field subject separation on full-frame sensors
- 14-blade rounded diaphragm delivers circular bokeh highlights and clean sunstar flares when stopped down
- Advanced 11-element / 7-group optical design with 1 aspherical, 1 ED and 3 HRI elements plus a floating lens group for edge-to-edge definition and close-focus correction
- 0.4m minimum focusing distance for tight environmental portraits, details and creative close-ups
- Sun and moon aperture markings switch the ring between clicked (stepped) and de-clicked (stepless) operation for stills or video
- Ergonomic crescent-shaped focus tab enables smooth single-finger manual focusing; on the Leica M Type II it takes the place of the original infinity-lock lever
- Rangefinder-coupled on Leica M, with a tactile resistance point at 0.7m signaling the switch to EVF focusing
- 1950s-inspired red-dot depth-of-field scale on an all-metal anodized aluminum barrel
- Compact 49mm front filter thread accepts standard UV, ND and polarizing filters
- Offered in Leica M, Sony E, Nikon Z, Canon RF and FUJIFILM X mounts, in black or silver finishes
