The Blackmagic Ethernet Switch 820 is an extreme-performance, low-latency IP video switch purpose-built for SMPTE-2110 broadcast workflows. In a single rack unit it delivers 8 ultra-fast 100G QSFP28 Ethernet connections plus 2 high-speed 10G RJ45 ports, giving facilities, OB trucks, and IP production environments the bandwidth headroom to carry uncompressed 2110 video, audio, and ancillary data with deterministic timing. Unlike a generic data-center switch, it is engineered specifically for television, with simple front-panel SMPTE-2110 routing and built-in router control so operators can manage sources and destinations directly from the unit.
Designed for the realities of live production, the Switch 820 places all network connections on the rear panel — the same side as the ports on most broadcast equipment — so cabling can be loomed neatly and kept out of the way. A bright front-panel LCD with a control knob lets operators see and switch routing crosspoints at a glance, while a dedicated NMOS control port and separate management port keep configuration, firmware updates, and orchestration cleanly isolated from the media network. Two RJ45 reference connections provide redundant PTP clock distribution for precise 2110 timing across the plant.
Reliability is core to the design. The Ethernet Switch 820 features dual redundant internal power supplies fed by two IEC C14 inputs, six fans for cooling redundancy, and a professional front-to-back airflow path that stays quiet enough to run near talent and equipment in trucks and mini racks. It is the highest-performance model in the Blackmagic Ethernet Switch family, making it ideal for demanding 100G IP infrastructures that need broadcast-grade uptime and straightforward, integrated control.
