The Pioneer DJ DDJ-400 is the compact two-channel controller that taught a generation of DJs how to mix on rekordbox. Its control surface mirrors the layout of Pioneer DJ's club-standard CDJ players and DJM mixers, with the Beat FX section, CUE/LOOP CALL buttons, loop controls and tempo sliders placed exactly where they sit on the professional gear. Skills learned on this unit carry straight over to a club booth, which is why the DDJ-400 remains one of the most sought-after starter controllers even after its retirement in favor of the DDJ-FLX4.

Each deck carries a touch-sensitive jog wheel, eight rubber performance pads for Hot Cue, Beat Loop, Beat Jump and Sampler (plus Keyboard, Pad FX and Key Shift modes with Shift), a dedicated Beat Sync button and a 60 mm tempo slider. The two-channel mixer offers three-band EQ, a Sound Color FX filter per channel, channel-level meters and a Beat FX engine with the same effect set found on DJM mixers. The controller is bus powered over a single USB cable and includes a built-in 24-bit audio interface with RCA master output, a 3.5 mm headphone output and a 1/4 inch microphone input, so no external sound card or mixer is needed. rekordbox's Tutorial feature can walk a first-time user through the controls step by step.
