Description
The Thypoch Eureka 50mm f/2 is a collapsible manual-focus prime that revives the pocketable 50mm standard lens of the 1950s and rebuilds it with modern glass. Retract the barrel and the lens shrinks to just 27mm deep, turning a rangefinder body into something that genuinely slips into a coat pocket; twist it out to 41.2mm and you have a fast, normal-angle lens ready to shoot. With a 46-degree diagonal field of view, a knurled all-metal barrel and a compact profile that stays out of the viewfinder, the Eureka 50mm is a natural everyday-carry companion for street photography, documentary work and travel, where the smallest, quietest camera is usually the one that gets the picture.
Optically the Eureka 50mm follows a classic double-Gauss formula of 6 elements in 4 groups, but Thypoch has modernized it from the inside out. An extra-low dispersion (ED) element suppresses chromatic aberration while a high refractive index (HRI) element corrects field curvature and spherical aberration, so the lens holds crisp detail on high-resolution digital sensors while still rendering the gentle, characterful tonality that vintage optics are loved for. The 12-blade diaphragm keeps the aperture opening rounded right through the f/2 to f/16 range, so out-of-focus highlights stay smooth and the transition from sharp to soft never turns clinical. Manual focus runs down to 0.9m from the sensor plane, and Thypoch states the lens covers not only full frame but the 44 x 33mm format of the Hasselblad CFV 100C, making it an unusually versatile compact fifty.
The Eureka 50mm is offered in two builds that share identical optics. The Lite version has an anodized silver aluminium exterior for durability and corrosion resistance and weighs only about 120g, the lightest way to keep a fast fifty on the camera all day. The Classic version is built with a silver chrome brass construction at roughly 218g, adding heft and a denser, jewel-like feel in the hand. Both are rated to operate from -30C to +70C, and both ship with a matching-material clamp-on A36 UV filter and clamp-on lens hood, so the retro kit is complete straight out of the box.
