Description
The Thypoch Ksana 21mm f/3.5 ASPH is a manual-focus ultra-wide prime built exclusively for Leica M-mount rangefinder cameras, and it is one of the most genuinely pocketable 21mm lenses ever made for the system. At just 27.29mm long and roughly 131g, the all-aluminum barrel adds almost nothing to a Leica M body, so its 90.6-degree diagonal field of view is always with you for travel landscapes, street photography, architecture, and cramped interiors. The lens is rangefinder coupled, with a tactile reminder at 0.7m telling you the coupling has ended so you can switch to live view or an EVF for the final stretch to its 0.5m close-focus limit.
Optically the Ksana 21mm is far more serious than its size suggests. Eight elements in six groups include one aspherical element, two extra-low dispersion (ED) elements, and three high-refractive-index (HRI) elements, a combination that keeps chromatic aberration and distortion low while holding resolution across a full-frame image circle. What sets this wide-angle prime apart is Thypoch's Epoch Coating.73', a deliberately vintage-flavored gold coating that recreates the golden-amber flare of 1970s glass: shoot into the light and you get warm, characterful veiling and ghosting instead of clinical nothing; shoot normally and it renders clean, high-fidelity, true-to-color images.
Handling follows the classic rangefinder playbook. A scalloped focus ring with a crescent focusing tab, an aperture ring running f/3.5 to f/22, and a straight 9-blade iris that draws crisp 18-point sunstars once you stop down to f/4. The slim 39mm (E39) filter thread and 42mm front diameter keep filters small and inexpensive, and the lens comes in a bold Silver or an understated Black finish, with an optional dedicated lens hood bundle that blocks stray side light for extra contrast. Part of the Ksana series, named for the Sanskrit ksana, the eastern concept of the fleeting instant, this is a discreet everyday-carry Leica M wide-angle lens for photographers who want character back in their files.
